Marie Curie

Marie Sklodowska Curie was born in Poland in 1867. She moved to Paris as a young adult to pursue her passion for science and went on to become the first woman to ever win a Nobel Prize in Physics. Not stopping there, she also won a Nobel Prize in Chemistry, making her the first person to win in two different fields.

Marie’s groundbreaking discoveries included two elements – polonium and radium – that had never been seen before. She isolated radium salts and conducted groundbreaking research on their properties, leading to important breakthroughs in our understanding of radioactivity. She also advanced the medical uses of X-rays and even drove a mobile X-ray ambulance during World War I!

Marie Curie was a brilliant woman, but she knew scientific discovery also takes focus and perseverance. She once famously said, “We must believe that we are gifted for something and that this thing must be attained.” She lived her life as a testimony to this ideal.

As a symbolic representation of her achievements, her action figure is holding a flask that signifies the radium salts she remarkably isolated. Also included is a distilling flask, an important laboratory instrument for Marie’s work.
